Hong Kong is a major international air-traffic hub for the region, handling over 30 million passengers a year, Hong Kong's impressive international airport is located at Chek Lap Kok (CLK), on the northern shore of Lantau and about 34 km (21 miles) from Central. While the interior is rather bland and cold, CLK's Y-shaped terminal is at least highly efficient. Aircraft are received at a plethora of gates; moving walkways and an Automated People Mover speed arrivals to Immigration where queues are dealt with swiftly. Suitcases are usually circling the carousel when you reach the baggage hall, and there is a large shopping mall, left luggage office, post office an adjacent 1,100 room hotel plus plenty of (rather pedestrian) food and beverage outlets. The terminal is also dotted with other facilities, such as smoking rooms, ATMS and international communications embracing phone, fax and the internet.
