Hong Kong - Macau by Boat

There are numerous ways to travel from Hong Kong to Macau by sea. Fares for sea crossings vary between services and the class of ticket, the time of the day, and the day of the week you travel. Generally, tickets cost between around HK$100 and HK$200. From the most up-to-date information on fares, check with the company providing the service or the Hong Kong offices of the Macau Government Tourists Office, tel: 2857 2287 or at http://www.macautourism.gov.mo

Regardless of when you go, make certain you have return tickets in your possession, since seats are always fully booked. Baggage is limited to 9 kg (20 lb), and there is not much space on board for large suitcases.

Just about all the Macau ferry sailings use the Macau Ferry Terminal in the Shun Tak Centre in Hong Kong Island's Central District, with the exception of the catamaran and hoverferries, which use the China Ferry Terminal on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront alongside Harbour City, on Kowloon.

Turbojets are propelled by water jets and ride above the waves at about 40 knots. They carry the largest percentage of passengers between Hong Kong and Macau in about an hour. They carry about 270 passengers, and light refreshments are provided on board, with complimentary newspapers, coffee and tea on the first class deck. The New World First Ferry “flying cats” are two-deck catamarans that carry 400 passengers at around 45 knots and leave every hour or so from 8 am until 10 pm between Tsim Sha Tsui and Macau.

Turbojets depart every 15 minutes from 7 am to 5 pm, then every 30 minutes to midnight, with several other sailings throughout the night. Contact the Far East Hydrofoil Co. at tel: 2859 3333 or the New World First Ferry on tel: 2516 9581

There is also a computer booking service for turbojets and flying cats called Ticketmate. Many of their 11 outlets in Hong Kong are in the major major MTR stations. You can purchase a passage up to 28 days in advance. Their three outlets in Macau allow you to buy a passage up to 7 days in advance. In Hong Kong, between 9 am and 8 pm, holders of American Express, MasterCard or Visa Cards can book by phone up to 28 days in advance by dailing 2921 6688. (This service is not offered in Macau.)
