There are four fast and efficient rail systems – the airport express line (AEL), Mass Transit Railway (MTR), Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) and Light Rail Transit (LRT). A fifth, the Kowloon-Canton West Rail, opened in December 2003.
Each is air-conditioned and runs from early morning until late at night.
The AEL (tel: 2881 8888) links the airport with Hong Kong Island in just 23 minutes, with stops at Tsing Yi and Kowloon. Single fares cost HK$90-$100, returns HK$160-180. (Free shuttle buses operate between AEL stations and nearby hotels.)The MTR (tel: 2881 8888) network of four interlinked lines covers the north shore of Hong Kong Island, east and west Kowloon and the north shore of Lantau Island. Adult single fares range from HK$4-26. The MTR has interchanges at Prince Edward and Kowloon Tong stations with the KCR (tel: 2602 7799), which runs from hung Hom in Kowloon to the boundary with the Mainland at Lo Wu. Hung Hom is also the starting point for rail journeys to mainland China and beyond. KCR fares start at HK$4.50 for an adult in ordinary class.
The LRT (tel: 2468 7788) runs between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun. Fares start at HK$4.
The West Rail (tel: 2684 8833) links Sham Shui Po in north Kowloon with the western New Territories through Yuen Long and ending in Tuen Mun. There are interchange stations linking the line with the LRT and MTR. Adult single fares start from HK$4.
