Hong Kong Taxis

Hong Kong Taxis

Three sorts of color coded taxis ply for trade in Hong Kong. Red taxis can travel anywhere except for Lantau island. Green taxis may only operate in the New territories, and blue cabs are restricted to Lantau Island. However, all taxis may carry passengers between the airport on Lantau and their respective areas.

Flagfall in red taxis is HK$15, and HK$12.50 for other cabs. There are additional charges for heavy luggage, animals and traveling via tunnels, which are all posted inside the taxi. Many taxi drivers can speak some English and know the main hotels and tourist spots in Hong Kong, but can at times become linguistically and geographically challenged. To avoid problems, take your destination written down in Chinese. If you encounter difficulties, all cabs are equipped with a radio telephone and somebody at the control center should be able to translate.

Taking foreigners for a ride by a circuitous route is not unknown, and drivers will sometimes refuse a fare, usually if the journey will take them out of their way as they are about to finish work. You may call a police officer or phone the complain hotline, tel: 2527 7177, but to save time it is probably better to walk off and find another taxi.
